About

I learned to teach from my father, I didn't know it at the time but listening to my PGA Class A Golf Professional father teach golf every day sunk in and transferred to my snow sports instruction.  I started snowboarding when I was 8 on a tiny Midwest hill, when I was older I became an instructor there.  I joined the United States Marine Corps and was able to snowboard in other states and countries.  After my service in Operation Iraqi Freedom I moved to Avon Colorado to work for the top ranked Ski School in the US, at Beaver Creek Resort of Vail Resorts.  These instructors, my peers and new teachers are simply the best of the best.  Even the most advanced instructors can learn so much from just being around the sheer amount of talented teachers there.  Recently my little brother was diagnosed with cancer (was also a Beaver Creek Instructor) and moved back to Iowa to be closer to family and help support one another though this trial for our family. Therefore at this time I'm "between" resorts and don't have a home teaching hill.  I am maintaining my credentials and certifications and will be back out teaching in the near future. My teaching theory is simple.  There is no "right" there is no "wrong" there is only snowboarding...   Everyone is different no two people snowboard the same.  Its not meant to be a ONE WAY only.  Obviously there are basic skills that must be obtained but after that become freedom.  I focus on my teaching individually, even in a group session this is possible if you connect and identify with your student's needs, restrictions, and goals. My father calls his golf teaching the "Mr. Miyagi's school of golf"  using daily tasks, techniques and other already obtained skills to teach one to play golf...  and one of the first things you'll hear me ask a student... "What is one of your favorite sports or physical activities to do?  I can show you how that sport will help you learn to snowboard."
